Florianópolis

The island is mainly known for its stunning coastline, with beaches to suit every taste. The northern beaches offer shallow, calm waters suitable for swimming, and attract families and tourists in search of a good sunbathing spot. The wilder Atlantic coast with its large windswept bays is a mecca for surfers, kitesurfers and windsurfers, as well as nature lovers and walkers enjoying the breathtaking views.

A small mountain range forms the spine of the island, and provides opportunities for beautiful walks and viewpoints. Two large lagoons can be found in the east and south of the island.

The island has a rich and interesting history, which can be explored through its colonial buildings, its forts and its churches. Florianopolis city has four museums which offer an insight into the culture and history of the island. Outside the city, there are a number of small towns and villages, all with a very distinct character - from the vibrant tourist resorts on the north and east coast, to the small Azorean fishing villages to the west and south, and farming communities throughout the centre of the island.

Brazil is a very child friendly country, and the island is a great family holiday destination. Small children can play to their hearts content in calm, shallow waters while their parents watch from a beachside cafe. Older children have great fun learning to surf, kayak or windsurf. Away from the beach, there are waterparks and activities such as sand boarding and horse-riding. For rainy days, there are cinemas with English films, ten pin bowling and a number of soft play centres.

Florianopolis is a relatively wealthy area, and so it has a good infrastructure, roads and services. It is also one of the safer areas of Brazil, with a low rate of crime, particularly outside the city.
